Our step-by-step process works. We have built it for success. Each step includes everything you need to know and everything you need to do to find compatible homemates and a home to live in together.
To learn why you need to take your time with each step, read
“Take Your Time: A happy home doesn’t happen in a day”
Step 1: Learn
To begin, check out our Getting Started articles here. The more you learn now about shared living, the better prepared you will be for the next steps.
If you need some help to navigate our website, we're working on some documentation and will have "office hours" online twice a week - register here.
Step 2: Create Your Profile (I'm ready to sign up)
Your profile will explain what you are looking for and let other members know something about you. Respond to the questions, and then write your own Introduction to add your own appeal.
Step 3: Shop for Compatible Homemates
Once your profile is complete, you can search through other profiles (after you login, look under the Subscribers menu) and note the folks you want to chat with in our private channels in Zulip.
In the Articles for Subscribers we provide tips on how to choose wisely, supportive articles and a checklist to help you prepare to meet and talk with potential homemates.
Step 4: Chat with Potential Homemates
Members can chat in regional or topical channels, or send direct messages to get to know one another, and then set up in-person meetings with one or more potential homemates. Spending time together before you live together is a key to success.
Step 5: Co-create a Homemate Agreement
You and your chosen homemates will learn about our homemate agreements and why they are essential for success. You will discover how-to create an agreement or get support from one of our coaches to help you build your agreement.
Step 6: Find your New Home
You might choose to live with a member who owns her home. Or as a homemate group of two or more, we will show you how to find a home that is perfect for all of you. Your homemate group could also choose to work with our real estate investor who will purchase the home you want and then become your landlord.
Step 7: Living the Dream
Even after your homemate group has moved in to your new home, stay in the community. We are here to help. We will check in with you every few months and offer support as needed. Or if you run into a snag, you can ask for individual help from one of our volunteers.
