If you are renting more space than you need and want to have a homemate to share the space, you are very welcome here at Senior Women Living Together.
However, there are some things you need to understand before you become a subscriber and start looking for homemates.
Our requirement for leaseholders…..
Only renters who are named on a lease are covered by the Residential Tenancies Act. This means that if your homemate does not sign the lease, she will have no legal protection or rights.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult if not impossible to get a landlord to add another person to the lease.
So, in order to protect our subscribers, we require that leaseholders agree to our Leaseholder Declaration. This reassures us that you will provide some protection for your homemate. And it reassures your potential homemates that you appreciate their vulnerable position.
It includes some protections for you as well. Inviting someone to come and live in your home can be risky. For instance, you might be concerned about the safety of your home or your belongings. So, you will see that our Leaseholder Declaration includes situations that protect you too.
Of course, spending lots of time with a prospective homemate is always what SWLT recommends. Be sure to read our articles about compatibility and get very familiar with our Homemate Agreement as well. This is the best way to ensure that your shared-living arrangement is successful.
