SWLT depends on volunteers for everything we do.
Whether you're here seeking homemates, looking for some worthwhile work experience to start your career, or just really interested in the work we're doing, we can find a place to use your time and talents.
Currently, we're actively looking for:
- Moderators to check in regularly and help people in the chat system
Position: Moderator
Term: Indeterminate
Reports to: Web lead
Moderators work with our subscribers to help them find their bearings in our online community, and may also interact in person.
As the primary contact for your region, you will:
- Attend training with the web lead to learn how the SWLT process and platforms work in the context of their tasks
- Welcome new subscribers, and start conversations in the chat platform
- Participate in developing documentation/standard messages to encourage subscribers to use the tools for conversation and meetings
- Arrange and promote meetups (in-person social events to create a low-risk environment for subscribers to get to know each other)
- Report back on activities and contribute to moderators channel (numbers of attendees, tips on finding local free/low-cost venues); provide feedback on materials and resources needed
- Coordinate with SWLT board member or outreach volunteer to present or table at events in your area
- Outreach - are you willing to go to your local seniors' hangouts and talk about SWLT; or put up posters at libraries, community centres?
Accordion content.
- People willing to be trained in conflict resolution (we want to help more people overcome issues with co-housing)
Accordion content.
- Website support
Volunteer work on membership resources to support our web services will include the following:
- Attend training with the web lead to learn how the SWLT process and platforms work - (profile creation, welcome email and ongoing communications)
- Ongoing maintenance of membership accounts
- Assist outreach volunteers and channel moderators in welcoming new subscribers, and develop documentation/standard messages to encourage subscribers to use the tools for conversation and meetings
- Assist the web lead in finding ways to reduce the technical burden on subscribers
- Board members to help spread the workload of governance, fundraising and outreach
After volunteering for a period of time, interested individuals (especially with nonprofit experience in governance, accounting or fundraising) may ask to join the board of directors. We have a working board (we have jobs in SWLT programs as well as attending board meetings) so each position will be created in line with current needs and talents.
All volunteers are expected to be aware of and follow our Code of conduct, and will sign a nondisclosure agreement before being involved with our subscriber data or representing SWLT.
For less commitment, please like us on social media (share our Facebook page and follow us on LinkedIn). If you're already seeking homemates, please jump in to the chat and welcome and support new folks.
Let us know what other talents you would like to share by emailing volunteercoordinator@swlt.ca or using our Contact form.
